Hi there Lynne!
Well basically both are polaroid cameras. however the rainbow striped one is from the land camera series. This is an older line when most people were using the now out of production time zero sx-70 film. This film was highly prized for being able to manipulate the photo by “massaging” the photo after it came out to smudge the colours and manipulate the hues. However, this film has been discontinued for a couple of years already! However, with a filter which we sell for 15 bucks, you can use the polaroid 600 film which is more readily available and also which we have on hand. This filter is to account for the different exposure properties of the 600 film. Using it without the filter would result in the photo being highly exposed. Another thing about the rainbow camera is that there is no built in flash and is thus meant to be used as an outdoor/lighted areas camera only. The beauty of the rainbow camera is that it is a vintage model from the 1970s-80 (it’s over 20 years old!) but still in very pristine condition. The newer black polaroid has a macro mode and a flash which allows you more options when taking photos. (you can emulate the lomography colousplash effect by taping a coloured filter over the flash). Also, this camera allows you to use polaroid 600 film without the need of the filter. Also, it is a auto exposure camera which means you just snap and the exposure settings are automatically factored in.
If you ask me which is better…i would go for the rainbow striped one! (slightly biased decision cause i like retro things) i personally think that vintage stuff were built to a higher quality standard than the newer stuff, but the draws would be that hardly anyone will have the same polaroid as you! in terms of photo quality, both would give you the same results, but the rainbow camera has a manual exposure setting which allows you to play around with the outcomes of your polaroid picture! (more appealing to me). the black polaroid however would let you take photos in the dark and play around with the flash! So…in the end. your decision would hinge on what kind of photos you’re planning on taking! Hope this helps!
P.s the rainbow camera allows for an external flash with a specialized flash hotshoe but it’s hard to find.
